AirAsia names Bahrain board, sets March deadline for flights

AirAsia Group has named a board of directors for its Bahrain operations, and hopes to begin flights to the Gulf nation by March as part of its regional expansion, the company said today.

In a statement today, AirAsia Group, formerly known as AirAsia X Bhd, said the board will be chaired by Dr Serra Kirdar, with Fam Lee Ee as vice-chairman, Bernama reported. The non-executive directors are Faisal Khalid Kanoo, Nawaf Al Zayani, Akram Safa, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon and Jamaludin Ibrahim.

The airline’s owner, Capital A Bhd, reached an agreement with the Bahrain government in November 2025 and announced in February this year that Bahrain would be its Middle Eastern hub.

AirAsia Group advisor and Capital A chief executive officer Tony Fernandes said Bahrain is strategically important to the group as the gateway connecting Asean with the Middle East, Europe and beyond.
